Ragnar Lothbrok's "many sons" are the crux of season 5's plot and unsurprisingly the death and departure of the Vikings' lead after 4 glorious seasons hasn't hampered the fandom.






Ragnar is said to have been the father of three sons—Halfdan, Inwaer (Ivar the Boneless), and Hubba (Ubbe)—who, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and other medieval sources, led a Viking invasion of East Anglia in 865.

However, Fimmel did not always plan to play the show’s main protagonist.For four seasons, Travis Fimmel portrayed Viking warrior and King Ragnar Lothbrok.Unfortunately, his character’s death at the end of season four meant Fimmel’s time on Vikings was over.However, there was the possibility that Fimmel could have lasted on Vikings much longer if he had landed the role he originally wanted to play.When casting for Vikings was underway, at first, Fimmel did not want to audition for the role of Ragnar Lothbrok.Instead, he wanted to audition for the part of Floki – Ragnar’s close friend and explorer.However, the role went to Gustaf Skarsgård instead and luckily, Fimmel was cast opposite Skarsgård as the main protagonist, Ragnar Lothbrok.Speaking to The Wrap, Fimmel said: “I actually wanted to play Floki originally, but Gustaf was already cast.”He also added that Skarsgård did a “way better” job as Floki than he ever could.Fimmel revealed the only main role left was Ragnar Lothbrok and he quickly taped his audition for the role of Lothbrok in his kitchen in rural Victoria, Australia.Inquisitor reported that Fimmel sent in his audition tape for Ragnar just one week before filming for the first season was meant to take place.The series was originally intended to be a one-off miniseries but was quickly renewed for a second season and now, Vikings is halfway through its sixth and final series.The show followed the rise of Ragnar Lothbrok and the story of his sons, Ivar the Boneless (played by Alex Hogh Andersen), Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye (David Lindström), Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) and Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig).Sadly, Ragnar was killed by King Aelle (Ivan Kaye) in season four of Vikings, after being thrown into a pit of venomous snakes.Since then, Ragnar’s sons have sought to avenge their father’s death’s which has led to disastrous divides in the Lothbrok family.The season six, part A finale saw Ivar the Boneless and Hvitserk attack Bjorn Ironside’s Kattegat with the help of Prince Oleg of Novgorod (Danila Kozlovsky) and the Rus Vikings.Judging by the battle scenes, it looks like Ivar, Hvitersek and Oleg had defeated Bjorn and King Harald (Peter Franzén) of Norway’s forces, with both men gravely injured by the end of the episode.Speaking to TV Guide, show creator Michael Hirst spoke about the plot of Vikings season six, part B.He said: “I think perhaps one of the unexpected things about that episode, the last episode of 6A, was how definitive it seemed to be that this is a wipeout for the Vikings that we’ve never really seen.“And you know, we’ve seen the power of the Rus. For four seasons, Travis Fimmel portrayed Viking warrior and King Ragnar Lothbrok.

Production on Season 3, which will air in 2015, is scheduled to begin this summer.
