Greg Lake has been "The Voice" of progressive rock. If you loved his music and his wonderful musical gift, you will enjoy this book. No deep down dirt about sex, drugs and rock and roll - just his view of what life on the road was like, how he enjoyed his fellow musicians and the fans. silentname Celkovo môžem povedať, že som spokojný s filmom. Greg Lake first won acclaim as lead vocalist, bass guitarist and producer when, together with Robert Fripp, he formed King Crimson. This book was a final book end. I would say for King Crimson and ELP fans only but there are a lot of them. This memoir reflects the personality of the man himself: a plain rockstar, with an unbeatable touch on acoustic guitar and the voice of an angel. Greg accepts that his career never hit the same heights after ELP and again you have to wonder if that was down to his laid back attitude. One of their very first performances was at the historic Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 and they went on to headline California Jam, one of the biggest concerts of the 1970s, attended by 350,000 people. Probably the voice of his generation, Greg fronted the greatest rock supergroup of the 1970s but never held with the 'progressive' tag that attached itself to both the music and the excess. Greg was the best! His obvious respect for Keith and Carl, the various managers and road crew and other musicians comes across. They want the adulation they had achieved but where can they find it? Some sad bits of course. The meter of the book flows steadily and beautifully, rather like his recorded musical work. He is the singer in the early King Crimson, and of course bassist and singer in the Emerson, Lake and Palmer supergroup, who filled arenas in the middle of the seventies, just like Justin Bieber does nowadays. An extraordinary insight into a bygone era when prodigious talent coupled with breathtaking prodigality to produce some of the most unforgettable performances in the history of rock n roll * Tribune * Full of astonishing stats. I've been a fan of Greg Lake's since 1970. For example he said that Cozy Powell would say that Keith and Greg had a good relationship whereas Cozy said when their band broke up the relationship between the two was fractious.
The total meeting, courtship and wedding to Regina comprised 2 or 3 sentences, so we are left with musical islands with nothing to link them together. Just to be clear, in terms of pure entertainment this book is not so sparkly as the ones of Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman; but we are not talking about a pianist who punched his own piano with a knife, nor about a wizard dressed like Merlin. I am a life long ELP fan and Greg Lake along with the other 2 members of the band are my idols. Nothing scurrilous at all. The book is as nice as the man.
I do wonder whether the fact that he knew that he was terminally ill had some bearing on the contents. Greg Lake the great man the legend the inspiration , this autobiography is like a good wine it needs to be taken at a steady pace and not rushed. So I was very interested in reading Greg Lake's story and getting his viewpoint. It is a true memoir taking the reader easily through the life of a musician, talking about the important parts, the music and bands. The three created a unique live theatrical performance which featured Emerson attacking his keyboards with knives, Palmer playing a 2.5 ton stainless steel kit and Lake performing on a GBP6,000 Persian rug which had its own roadie. He is hugely respectful and philosophical about his life and his working relationships and sounds like a man at peace with himself. Its easy now to see who had the business brain within Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. It’s sad but natural that our favourite musicians are leaving, i’ll treasure this book. I was not looking for salacious details of his life, nor overly intimate ones, but hoping to get a glimpse of the man and how he lived but got nothing.
